8th Basingstoke Scout Group

The Group Sign

In the early 1930's, the Scoutmaster (Skipper Frank Terry) of the 8th Basingstoke Scout Troop devised the Group sign, which members of the 8th Group still wear on the point of their Group Scarves.

The sign consists of three Red Indian signs :-

A circle, which has no end, and therefore means "never-ending" or "always".

Two parallel lines meaning "a pathway".

The arrow of "peace". The golden arrow of peace was the symbol of the 3rd World Jamboree held in 1929 at Arrow Park, Birkenhead, Cheshire.

To a Red Indian, the sign would mean something along the lines of "May you walk in the paths of peace forever".

However we would say: "May you have a peaceful journey through life" or perhaps more simply: "Peace be with you always".

How the symbol looks on the back of the scarves of the 8th Basingstoke.
